New Bandstand - "The Butterfly"

When the West Point Community Theatre received permission from the City of West Point to landscape the two parcels of land north of the theatre, plans included room for an outdoor performance space. Shortly after, an anonymous donor stepped forward to make this space possible.

Architect Eddy Santamaria of Contrivium Design + Urbanism in Omaha was enlisted to help design a truly unique and beautiful structure that would be appropriate for the setting and a statement about West Point and the arts.

What resulted is known as "The Butterfly," which was inspired by the notion of making something that reflected and identified with the artistic emphasis of the West Point community as well as the renewal of our historic theatre. The intention was also to create a structure that acts as a sculpture when it is not in use.

One of the most unique features about The Butterfly is the fact that the "wings" will be movable. During the spring and summer months, the structure will be open, as depicted above. During the fall and winter months, the wings will be closed, as shown below. The large wings also serve the very practical purpose of shading the audience from the western sun during evening performances.
The underside of the wings of The Butterfly will also be illuminated by colored lights to strengthen the visual impact during the evening hours.

The West Point Community Theatre is anxiously awaiting the completion of this project, which will add a lineup of summer and fall concerts and productions to take place in this magnificent new space.

Great American Comedy Festival Amateur Night Coming to West Point!

In need of a good laugh? Norfolk’s 2011 Viaero Great American Comedy Festival will offer the opportunity to laugh at and with comedian wannabes right here in West Point. The Comedy Festival has chosen the West Point Community Theatre as one of its four preliminary amateur comedian competition sites.

The date and time for the West Point competition is Saturday, March 26 at 8 p.m.

At the preliminary round, 10 amateurs will be given the opportunity to do a six-minute comedy routine and then audience members will vote on who they’d like to see advance to the finals of the amateur competition. The top two will advance to the finals held in Norfolk June 15-19. All comedy routines will be network TV clean.

This is just a reminder that the bi-monthly general meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 26. We will have election of Board Members at this meeting. To be able to run for a Board position or to vote for Board members, YOU MUST BE A PAID MEMBER. Dues for the 2011 calendar year will remain the same---$10.00 for individuals and $15.00 for couples. Capital Campaign
We have been in the planning stages of our capital campaign for the past three months. We anticipate being able to present this to the public mid-January. Stay tuned for more details! It's flurry of activity at the West Point Community Theatre and we'd like to let you know about a few upcoming events!

On Wednesday, October 20 at 7:30 p.m., Nebraska Shakespeare will present Romeo & Juliet. This show will be free and open to the public. Lutist Jeffrey Bunce of Oakland will provide period music beginning at 7:00. Nebraska Shakespeare will also travel to the West Point schools earlier in the day and present workshops on acting and Shakespearean Theatre. This event is generously sponsored by the West Point Community Arts Council.

Community Cinema comes to the West Point area with the premiere of Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian with a free screening on Thursday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond takes an entertaining, insightful, and often humorous look at the Hollywood Indian, exploring the portrayal of North American Natives through a century of cinema and examining the ways that the myth of “the Injun” has influenced the world’s understanding —and misunderstanding— of Natives. The Community Cinema screening of Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood Indian will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Nancy Gillis, of Cherokee/Muskogee/Choctaw heritage and executive director of the John G. Neihardt Center and Adjunct Professor of History at Wayne State College. Nancy will address key issues such as Native American Stereotypes.

WPCT Float Wins Frist Prize at Cuming County Fair!

Tryouts Dates for Fall Production

Tryouts for the West Point Community Theatre's Fall comedy will be Tuesday, August 17 and Wednesday, August 18 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on-stage at the Theatre.

Director for this production is Brandee Johnson with Jerry Hugo as Assistant Director.

We will present "Charley's Aunt" - a British comedy in three acts. 6 men and 4 women will be cast for the performance. Additional support members will be needed for set design and construction, costuming, advertising, work the performances, etc.

July Update

It's been a while since we've updated you on what's happening at the theatre. Be assured, we've been quite busy any many exciting things are happening!

Our landscaping project is nearing completion. Nearly all of the planting are in and the entire area has been freshly sodded. Initial bandstand drawings are complete and we hope that construction will begin in the coming months.

Next week, we will begin the renovation of the concession stand. We will be having a demolition and clean up night at the theatre on Tuesday, July 27 at 5:30 p.m. We will start demolition of the concession stand. We will also have clean up outside around the building to spruce it up for the fair. We would appreciate all the help we can get.

If you want to have a full update on what's going on at the theatre, we encourage you to attend the bi-monthly general meeting of the Community Theatre, which will be held Wednesday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Our children's acting workshop was a complete success! Both sessions were completely full. The kids worked very hard and put on an excellent performance last night.

Our summer melodrama, "I Only Have Fangs for You" was also quite successful and will debut once again during the Cuming County Fair August 14 & 15.

Plans are being made for our fall production, "Charlie's Aunt." Stay tuned for production details and tryouts.

Again, we certainly appreciate all of your support. We have some of the most dedicated patrons we could ever ask for. Again, thank you!

General Meeting Tonight!

Greetings theatre memebers, new and old!

There will be a general meeting of the West Point Community Theatre on THURSAY, MARCH 25 at 7:00 P.M. at the theatre. This was changed from the originally scheduled meeting on Wednesday, March 24 due to Lenten services. If you want to be a paid member of the theatre, the dues are $10.00 for a single membership and $15.00 for couples. These dues can be paid at the meeting or sent to Cindy Hugo at 744 East Sheridan, West Point.

First of all, congratulations to the directors, cast and crew and everyone involved in the production of OLIVER! for a spectacular show with over 1300 in attendance. Thank you!

WELCOME to all the new members of the theatre (all of you who were in, or involved in anyway with OLIVER). In case you weren't told, once in a play you are automatically included in our theatre group. We hope you will continue to be an active, intregal part of our group.

We will share with you all the exciting things we have coming up the rest of the year. We have been talking with a group of ladies that are going to be in a dance competition in Norfolk on April 17 for a promotion, "Dance for Tourism". They would like us to get involved with them for an afternoon of promoting our theatre in NE Nebraska with the dancing competition to follow in the evening. They have chosen us to work with, which is a requirement of the competition. And if they win they will donate the $400.00 prize money to the theatre. We will explain everything at the meeting and a decision must be made that night.

There will be lots to talk about so bring yourself, a friend and your ideas to help keep us on track with our lofty ideas.

West Point State Speech Qualifiers to Perform at the Theatre

The state speech qualifiers from West Point Central Catholic and West Point Public will be performing their speeches for the public on Sunday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the West Point Community Theater.

There will be quite a variety of speeches performed--an entertainment, a duet, a poetry, a humorous, an OID, an informative, a persuasive. It will probably take about an hour and a half at the most. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students. However, booster club passes will be honored at this event.

Eleven competitors in nine speech events from West Point’s high schools qualified for state competition to be held in Kearney next week. The following state qualifiers will perform on Sunday: Devon Birchem (entertainment public speaking, duet acting), Jennifer Garber (oral interpretation of serious prose), John Kingsley (oral interpretation of drama), Kirsten Klitz (duet acting), Danielle Kreikemeier (oral interpretation of drama), Kylie Kreikemeier (informative public speaking, persuasive public speaking), Spencer Leffler (oral interpretation of humorous prose), Claudia Magana (oral interpretation of drama), Dave Moore (extemporaneous public speaking, oral interpretation of drama), Morgan Nelson (oral interpretation of drama), and Megan Perry (oral interpretation of poetry).

General Meeting this Wednesday

The West Point Community Theatre General Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the Theatre. We will have a lot to talk about!

During this meeting we will also hold our annual elections. We have new bylaws drawn up and these will be discussed at the meeting. In order to bring our current Board into conformity with these new bylaws, we will nominate a minimum of 12 candidates for the 12 Board positions. After the Board has been elected, the officers will be elected from the Board members. Along with incumbents running for reelection, we will ask for nominations from the floor at the meeting. If you have any questions, want to nominate someone, or can’t attend the meeting, please call president, Jerry Hugo at 380-9813.

Reports will be given from the Cinema Committee. We always have encouraging and exciting news on that front!

The Building Committee is getting closer to a plan for the renovations and additions we desperately need. We will have preliminary drawings available for review! We can now begin to put price tags on projects and start to raise funds. This will involve some serious challenges and money, so stay on board for the run to make this a premier attraction!

Bill Stokely and Marlene Weichman and crew have been hard at work in preparation for the March production of “OLIVER!” We will receive an update on their progress.

Our acceptance to the State and National Register of Historic Places is very exciting news for us. Thanks to our historian Chase Becker for all of his work.

Membership dues will be accepted for the 2010-year at this meeting. We will discuss reasons for a paid membership at this time. Dues remain at $10 for a single membership and $15 for couples.

We will have discussion on many other topics. Please bring your ideas for our projects. As you can see, we have a lot going on and hopefully we’ll see all of you at the meeting and again, if there are any questions or bits of advise, please feel free to call Jerry Hugo at 402-380-9813

Hello Everyone!

Many great things are going on around the West Point Community Theatre this time of year!

West Point Central Catholic performed their one-act, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Theatre on November 23 to a packed house! This is the best attendance that a CC one-act has ever seen! Best wishes to CC as they perform at District competition.

Tryouts for the musical "Oliver" were held last week and the cast will be announced next week. The dates for the production will be March 5-7 and March 12-13. Billy Stokely is director and Marlene Wiechman assistant.

Our Holiday Fundraiser with Monroe Crossing is THURSDAY at 7:30 p.m. with social beginning at 6:30. Tickets are going quickly, so if you're interested get your tickets NOW either online or at PetroMart in West Point. Hope to see you at this fun, holiday event!

A FREE MOVIE will be presented on Thursday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. This showing will benefit the West Point Food Pantry. Work Day at the Theatre Monday

At our last general meeting it was decided to have a clean up and Christmas decorating night on Monday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

There is a lot to do this night. We are having this clean up prior to the Monroe Crossing Fund Raiser. We will decorate the stage (still as it was for Arsenic and Old Lace) for the concert. Please bring any decorations you have, such as artificial trees, lights, garland, extension cords, adapters, etc.that you don't need or use, that we could use to decorate the theatre for our fundraiser.

We will also be cleaning up the kitchen area to be used as a "green room" for the band.

We will need to remove the curtain in front of the concession stand, set up tables to use that night, etc.

Be sure to purchase your tickets for Monroe Crossing! Anyone who would like to help that night, please let Jerry or Cindy know (372-5742-leave a message). We are also asking the workers to wear black pants (or ladies skirts if you prefer) and white tops.

First of all, a huge thanks to everyone who attended "Arsenic and Old Lace" this past weekend! It was a huge success! Hopefully you had as much fun as the actors!

A regular meeting of the WPCT members will be held THIS Wednesday, November 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Theatre. Everyone is welcome!

On Monday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m., West Point Central Catholic High School will present their one-act play. The play is a half hour adaptation of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" in a 1920's time setting. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for students (if you have a CC booster club pass--no charge).

On Thursday, December 3, we are bringing in Monroe Crossing, an excellent bluegrass group from Minneapolis, MN. This will be the first stop of their Christmas tour. Besides being an enjoyable evening for you, we hope it will be a big fundraiser for capital improvements. You may purchase your tickets online at our website, at the PetroMart in West Point, or at the Theatre Box Office during weekend movie hours. Balcony Renovation / Expansion Conceptual Drawings

One of the major projects that we've been focusing on lately is the renovation and expansion of the existing balcony area. This is the first set of conceptual drawing from our architect, Eddie Santamaria of Contrivium.

Areas directly underneath the balcony will also be addressed. This includes the restrooms and concession area.

An additional restroom is needed on the main floor. This issue will be addressed at the same time as the expansion of the balcony.

The balcony will be extended an addition 10 feet in order to seat an additional 104 upstairs.

Insulation project begins!

One important project for the new West Point Community Theatre is making it energy efficient.
Thanks to the volunteers who helped last week in removing the old ceiling behind stage, professionals were able to start this week on the insulation project. These photos include workers spraying on insulation to the ceiling high above the stage.

Theatre Work Week

The West Point Community Theatre is having a work week to prepare the Theatre for installing insulation above the stage area. We will meet at the Theatre at 5 pm Monday, August 31^st. The project’s main focus will be removing the false ceiling above the stage so that the insulation contractors can access the 40 foot loft area with scaffolding.

Everyone is welcome to help. We will serve food to the volunteers at about 6:30 pm on Monday. Please call Tom Wellman at 380-9246, or Jerry Hugo at 372-5742 to find out what tools would be helpful, and for more detail on the project.

We will be working from 5-9pm on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Wednesday will be a general cleanup of the Theatre to get it ready for the weekend movies. We also welcome anyone who has time to work during the day on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This project is a “Hands-On” Project through Thrivent Financial Services. Thrivent will provide funding to help with the insulation project. Members of Thrivent are encouraged to come and help out.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
It's been quite a project so far -- creating a movie theatre inside the West Point Community Theatre building! Along with tremendous financial support from our community, volunteers put in thousands of hours to create it. And we've got quite a list of volunteers who are now helping to operate it for four movies every weekend.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO HELP?
We need about four to five people in the concession stand, and a couple people to take tickets for each movie. Volunteers show up at 6:15 for a 7:30pm movie (12:45 for a 2:00pm matinee) to get everything ready. Ticket takers are usually done about 20 minutes after the movie begins, and the concession stand volunteers are usually done about a half hour before the end of the movie. We do ask that everyone stick around to help clean up the theatre after the movie -- it usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on the crowd.

Summer Melodrama Announced!

The West Point Community Theatre will be doing a production of the melodrama "Rustlers Revenge" on July 3, 4, and 5.

Tryouts will be THURSDAY, MAY 21 and TUESDAY, MAY 26 at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Theatre building. The cast will consist of 6 characters, 3 men and 3 women. Eric Lauritzen is directing. Those interested in stage crew, set construction, etc. are also encouraged to attend.

The First Movie at the new West Point Community Theatre will be Monsters vs. Aliens, rated PG. The first movie will be Friday night, May 1st at 7:30 p.m. The movie will also be featured Saturday and Sunday nights at 7:30, and a 2 p.m. matinee will be held on Sunday.

Movie Theatre set to open May 1st!

Along with help from volunteers, Midwest Cinema spent three days in West Point this week installing the movie theatre projection and sound equipment. As you can see, work continues on improving the building, getting it ready for the live musical performance of "Back the the 80's" April 17-18-19, and April 24-25.
The following weekend will be our
first movie -- with the title soon to
be announced. Movies will be shown
on the 10' by 26' screen every
Friday, Saturday and Sunday night
at 7:30. Admission will be $5 for adults, and $3 for high school students and younger.

The balcony wall was removed to allow for additional seating during live performances. Typically, our live theatre performances will draw over 300 people per showing - with our new permanent seating, the main floor will hold 205. Our eventual goal is to have to balcony hold 100 seats, however this number will be far less in the interim.

The mosaic murals, created in 1984 by the public high school art class have been placed in storage. We are currently looking for a new home for them. If you have any suggestions, please call the Community Theatre at 372-2250.

We also made an exciting discovery of long-covered decorative stenciling on the ceiling. Hopefully, we'll see this restored someday!

Nebraska State Historical Society Visit

A Visit to Geneva's Rialto II

On Saturday, January 10, members of the Theatre Committee traveled to Geneva, NE for a tour of the Rialto II Theatre. Geneva operates its theatre very similarly to how we hope to operate the West Point Community Theatre. It was very helpful to see the behind the scenes work that goes into running a movie theatre. We thank everyone at the Rialto II who most generously opened their doors to us.

As one can see, Geneva's theatre building is very beautiful and well kept. I think our minds were spinning with possibilities after seeing such a wonderful space!

The seating capacity of Geneva's theatre is roughly 350. The large balcony contains almost as many seats as the main floor. West Point's theatre will hold about 220.

One of the most interesting parts of the trip was seeing the projector in action.

Once again, thanks to all the folks at the Rialto II for their hospitality and assistance. Being able to see and experience a similar theatre has been a great help to us!

Fundraising underway!

Thanks to a $10,000 gift from Grain States Soya in West Point, our fund-raising efforts were jump-started last month at a West Point Chamber of Commerce Coffee. We've also received several other generous gifts to get things started. Our goal is to raise $150,000 to get the Movie Theatre equipment installed, build a concession stand, and do some renovation inside the building. We'll keep you posted!

Applause filled the city council chambers Tuesday night after a unanimous vote to allow the West Point Community Theatre to lease the old West Point City Auditorium to create a movie theatre/performing arts theatre there! The Beginnings of the Auditorium

As we begin to lay the foundations for the West Point Theatre project, it's worth taking a few moments to recall the early history of the Auditorium and how it came to be. This will be the first in a series of entries featuring the history and architecture of the Auditorium building.

The idea for an Auditorium in West Point was first proposed by a group of men who formed the West Point Cadet Band. The Cadet Band had a reputation for playing classical music exceptionally well. As their popularity increased, the band held a public meeting in early 1911 to ask the businesspeople of the city for financial support in building an auditorium. The money would be paid back to the investors without interest. The fundraising efforts began in June of 1911 and collected a total of $12,000. By the time the cornerstones were laid September 23, 1911, $17,805 had been contributed.

Construction progressed remarkably fast, and the Cadet Band's first concert in the new building was held on New Year's Day 1912. From the time of its inception to the first public event, the planning and construction of the Auditorium took a little less than one year.

In case you missed it, we want to put a movie theatre and performing arts theatre inside the old West Point City Auditorium! Discussion at the City Council meeting last night centered around installing theatre seating upstairs (using the 230 seats that have already been donated to our cause by the Gateway Theatre in Albion). There would be movies every weekend, except for the weekends reserved for live performances by the West Point Community Theatre, who would manage and operate the theatre year-round. We have some ideas on how to do this, but we need your ideas too! Any thoughts or suggestions?
